02504 FIRE APPARATUS ACCESS

PART 1: GENERAL

1.01 GENERAL

Designers should be aware of local requirements of the Ithaca Fire Department that deal with fire access to facilities. Most of the Cornell University campus is served by the Ithaca Fire Department. Plans for new facilities or alterations to existing facilities within the City of Ithaca are subject to review by the Building Department and the Fire Department. The Fire Department will be reviewing site and building plans for compliance with their standard for fire apparatus access. Designers are encouraged to meet with the Fire Department during the design process to assure compliance with the standard.

1.02 REFERENCE

The principle reference in site planning for appropriate access by the Ithaca Fire Department is the ITHACA FIRE DEPARTMENT APPARATUS ACCESS Design Standard, latest edition.

1.03 AUTHORITY

The ITHACA FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE APPARATUS ACCESS Design standard was established by the Fire Prevention Code Enforcement Officer of the City of Ithaca under the authority of Section 1161.2(c) of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building code, which states: "The designation and maintenance of fire lanes on private property shall be established as specified by the Code Enforcement Official."

1.04 APPLICABILITY

The standard is intended to apply to all buildings, structures, and property protected by the Ithaca Fire Department. Most of the Ithaca campus facilities of Cornell are so protected.

1.05 PURPOSE

The standard defines how buildings, structures, and property are to be provided with unobstructed access for fire fighting and emergency service personnel, apparatus, and equipment.

1.06 AVAILABILITY

Copies of the latest edition of the ITHACA FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE APPARATUS ACCESS Design Standard are available from the Fire Chief, City of Ithaca Fire Department, 310 West Green Street, Ithaca, New York 14850.
